My approach to anxiety (and how it can work for you).

Here's a little bit more about how I work with people experiencing anxiety. When you're already feeling anxious, it can help to know more about what to expect in our time together before you walk through the door.
My approach is holistic...
Anxiety often enters our lives at moments where a variety of factors are working together to make us more vulnerable. In our sessions, we'll explore the full picture of your life, including your network of relationships, your work or school environment, and your physical well-being. We'll explore solutions to help you leverage positive influences around you and address any contextual barriers that are getting in your way.
My approach is personalized (not one-size-fits-all)...
While anxiety borrows from similar patterns in all of its manifestations, no two people have exactly the same symptoms or need exactly the same approach. Each time we meet, I'll offer options for directions we can go next and invite you to collaborate with me in tailoring our time together. We'll pay close attention to what works in our sessions and do more of that. If what we've tried isn't working just yet, we'll get more varied and creative until we find exactly what makes a difference for you. So as you read what comes next, know that we'll craft a mix of tools that fits your preferences.
We'll explore triggers and thought patterns...
Anxiety thrives on remaining secretive and murky. We'll expose the tricks and strategies anxiety is using to catch you off guard and begin to identify ways to respond differently. The more you can name how anxiety is operating and predict how it might appear next, the more you will feel a sense of confidence in your ability to fight back. And with confidence comes a whole lot more calm.
We'll target physical symptoms and learn relaxation practices...
Physical symptoms usually play a role in maintaining and heightening anxiety, whether you are aware of them or not. We'll begin to notice what you feel in your body when anxiety strikes and I'll offer tools to help you relax.
We'll figure out what's already working (it's probably happening more than you realize!)...
It's easy to become overly focused on the times anxiety is present, but noticing what happens when anxiety is absent gives us important clues to how to help you. Together, we can identify and build on strategies you are already using to manage anxiety.
We'll conduct experiments....
We'll come up with things to try, then you'll test them out between sessions to see if they work. If your experiment is a success, we get to celebrate and find ways to do more of what went well. If your experiment isn't helpful, that will give us data we can use to create our next experiment. These are often very small, perhaps even silly, changes that help us calibrate and tweak our approach.
If you want to hear the technical stuff...
If you're looking for therapist jargon, here you go: I work from a primarily postmodern perspective (including collaborative, narrative, and solution-focused methods) while incorporating elements of CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) and mindfulness.
And I love what I do!
Finally, I just want you to know that I absolutely love working with anxiety. Each experience for me is both a fascinating puzzle to solve and a rewarding opportunity to help someone fully enjoy life. I would consider it a privilege to work with you as you "say goodbye!" to anxiety.
