MEET LAURIE

Broad Ripple, Indianapolis, therapist, counseling, therapy, counselor, anxiety, couples, gottman, MFT
I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who has spent my career working with diverse individuals, couples, and families in a wide variety of settings, including counseling centers, hospitals, and churches.  I value and honor people in their uniqueness and welcome clients of all backgrounds; I appreciate opportunities to work with people across differences of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, and more.

My training includes:
-Currently pursuing certification as a Neurodiverse Couples Therapist with Aspergers/Autism Network
-Domestic Relations Mediation Training (40 Hours)
-Gottman Method Couples Therapy Training (Levels I and II)
-Mindful Self-Compassion Course with The Center for Mindful Self-Compassion
-Taos Institute Workshop on Social Construction and Dialogical Practices
-Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy (Christian Theological Seminary)
-Masters of Divinity (Pacific School of Religion)

I chose the field of Marriage and Family Therapy because it emphasizes our inherent innerconnectedness.  I have a particular passion for postmodern methods of counseling, which embody respect for clients' innate resiliency, resourcefulness, and sense of meaning.

I'm an avid journaler who creates therapy-informed jouraling resources and experiences over at Word Balm Studio.  I deeply believe in finding and expanding new pathways for support, growth, and change beyond traditional therapy; my Word Balm endeavors aim to do just that.

Outside of my work with clients, I enjoy connecting with other therapists and making contributions to our larger field.  I founded CanalScape Counseling Associates to create an opportunity to collaborate with colleagues I respect in an intentionally shared location and community.  I authored and presented a paper on my work with clients considering divorce at the Taos Institute's 25th Anniversary Conference in Cancun, which is now included as a chapter in the book Social Construction in Action.

Prior to my training in counseling, I accompanied people in times of celebration as well as loss in my role as a congregational pastor. I carry with me an ability to integrate clients' beliefs and values in navigating their current problems and possibilities (and don't worry, I've left behind any desire to preach!).

Outside the therapy room, I aim to "walk the talk"--I participate in my own therapy regularly and continuously seek opportunities to grow in my relationship to myself and others.  I treasure time with the people who are dear to me, especially over good food or in the presence of nature.  "Quality time" is my "love language" and I'm an Enneagram 3 who has (very slowly) learned to appreciate "being" as much as "doing".  Some of my favorite activities include: traveling, walking or running with my dog, journaling, and listening to podcasts (mostly true crime with a sprinkling of self-help).  I grew up in the Seattle area and have lived in California, Colorado, and Montana; I've called Indy my home since 2012.

You've read the professional stuff...
Now here's a more personal introduction to who I am!
