the power of one conversation: The Single Session Consultation

Picture
We've all been there before: a moment in life where we just need a little bit of outside perspective to help us build clarity and confidence regarding our next steps.  Perhaps it's a big decision about where to live or where to work.  Perhaps it's a conflict or frustration that keeps cropping up in a relationship with a friend, family member, partner, or co-worker.  Perhaps it's feeling disoriented in the midst of a big transition such as a new job, a move across country, or entering a new life stage.

Whatever it is that's weighing on your mind and heart in this moment, a single conversation may be all you need to lighten the load and reach for new possibilities.

Everyone deserves a skilled sounding board, no matter how temporary or mild your current problems may be.  My "Single Session Consultation" service is made especially for those moments when ongoing therapy is more help than you need, yet you still want a little something beyond the conversations your loved ones can provide.

A single session consultation can help you understand and begin to find solutions for issues such as:
  • interpersonal challenges at work or home
  • career discernment and decision making
  • intimate relationship problems and preferences
  • low motivation or momentum around an important goal
  • navigating significant changes in career, location, stage of life, spirituality, or relationships

what to expect: before, during, and after

Picture
Before we meet, I will share with you a pre-consultation questionnaire to help you organize your thoughts and focus your goals for our time together.  I'll carefully review this, organize my own thoughts, and provide you with a printed copy of your responses to refer to during our session.

When we sit down together, we'll focus in on your most important and attainable hopes for our conversation.  Our talk with one another should feel natural and comfortable, with understandings, ideas, curiosities, and solutions emerging in a focused yet organic way.  I will likely ask most of the questions and you will provide most of the answers, with me reflecting back your responses for further understanding and clarification.  I will also share my own thoughts when they appear useful and will welcome the opportunity to answer your questions of me as well.

After we meet, I will create a post-consultation summary for you to keep.  This summary will include both our assessments and analysis of your current problems as well as resources and actions steps we've identified to help you address these problems.

frequently asked questions

How long does a single session consultation last and what does it cost?
We will meet for up to 90 minutes.  The cost is $250 for the entire process, including pre and post consultation services (see description above).  You will be expected to pay the consultation fee at least 48 hours in advance of your appointment to reserve your time with me.

How do I know if a single session consultation is right for me?
If the problems you are experiencing only cause mild to moderate distress and if they have only been present for less than one year, a single session could be all you need to move in your desired direction.  You may also feel fairly confident in your own ability to navigate these difficulties on your own, you are simply seeking to support yourself more fully.

If your problems are causing moderate to severe distress, if they are long-standing, or if they are interconnected with persistent patterns in your life, ongoing therapy services are likely more beneficial for you.  Please note that a single session consultation is not mental health treatment and therefore not clinically appropriate for symptoms of anxiety, depression, addiction, or other mental health conditions.

Is this something all therapists do?
Nope.  Many therapists utilize approaches to therapy that work best with consistent, ongoing conversations (and honestly, they might be a little horrified with me for offering this service!).  My approach to therapy is informed by practices that emphasize the ability of a single conversation to create meaningful shifts in perspective and action; these practices also honor and value clients' wisdom and resourcefulness that enables them to continue building on a conversation long after it has ended.  All of this means the skills I draw upon in ongoing therapy translate well to the single session consultation/  I'm excited to be able to offer this unique option to fill an often unmet need.

Can I bring someone with me?
If there is a support person in your life you would like to include or if there is someone who shares this problem with you that you would like to invite into our conversation, I welcome the opportunity to work with both of you.  I do not recommend more than two people attend due to time constraints.  Please inform me about any additional conversation partners in advance of our session.

How do I schedule my consultation?
You may schedule your single session appointment using the  "book now" button above.  Please select the "Single Session Consultation" option when prompted.  I offer a limited number of consultations each week, if you do not see any appointments available on my calendar, my consultation slots are likely full.  If you do not see an appointment time that works for you, I'm so sorry, but I am unable to offer additional scheduling options.
